Apple Pressing at the Orchard

Apple Pressing - Saturday 19th October 2024
2:00 pm - 4 :00 pm

CANCELLED

Unfortunately, this year's Apple Pressing is cancelled. Hope to be back next year.

There is a bumper crop of apples this year. What do you do with yours? The compost heap is all very well but if you bring them to us you could have lots of lovely juice instead.

What do you need? Save all your good apples, not the ones with bruises and maggots, along with as many clean screw-top glass bottles as you can. We will make lovely apple juice from the apples (apples may need to be mixed for pressing).

Also, come along and see how the Orchard restoration is progressing and what we’ve found out about the cottages. Guided tours and refreshments available.

Entry is free and cash donations towards the restoration and maintenance of the Orchard are welcome.

To find us, head up Keen's Lane, Chinnor, OX39 4PF - cross the railway crossing - the Orchard’s directly on the right.

2023 Apple Pressing at Donkey Lane Community Orchard

It is with great regret that due to an extreme shortage of apples Greening Chinnor will be unable to hold the planned apple pressing in the Orchard. Several factors have caused this. We had a bounteous crop last year and many old fruit trees crop well and then have a rest. During blossom time we had several sharp frosts and finally the growing season has veered between deluge and drought. Unfortunately, a couple of local growers who could also be guaranteed to supply a few boxes had the same problem as us, plus the affliction of brown rot. Fingers crossed for next year and we hope the Wassail brings us better fortune.

We have seen a few members of the community picking the extremely sparse crop of windfalls. Good for them. The orchard is a Community Orchard and is always open. We are happy for anyone to collect windfalls. There is no charge and all we ask is that you do not pick for commercial purposes, damage the trees and always take your litter home.

Apple Pressing at the Orchard

Sunday 24th October 2 pm - 4 pm

Do you have a bumper crop of apples this year? What do you do with yours? Why not save all your good apples, not the ones with bruises and maggots, and bring them to Donkey Lane Community Orchard on the 24th October along with some clean screw-top glass bottles and we will help you make some lovely apple juice from your apples together with our own orchard apples.

As well as apple pressing, we will have refreshments including freshly pressed apple juice and be holding guided tours of the orchard.

Come and find out about the lives of those who lived at the orchard; the story of the fruit trees and the amazing varieties of plant life we’ve discovered and how you can get involved.

This is a free event and donations towards the orchard would be most welcome.

Apple Day at the Orchard

What a day we had at our first autumn apple event on Saturday 19th October and even the weather was kind to us.

We'd hoped for a good supply of apples and we weren't disappointed. Apples came from all over the village plus what we picked at the orchard, a very interesting blend. All in all we managed to produce about 50 bottles of freshly pressed artisan apple juice. Not bad for our first attempt.

We had some great refreshments made by our volunteers which went down very well with the visitors and our helpers! 'Find the tree' quiz, the longest peel competition and guess the weight of the pumpkin kept our smaller visitors entertained.

It was good to see so many people interested in the social history of the site and there was much perusal of our old photographs. We have now identified approximately 1/3 of the heritage apples growing in the orchard and hope to identify the rest next year.

Our thanks to everyone who helped make this a great afternoon.
