Donkey Lane Community Orchard – The Inhabitants of Guntrip’s Lane – 1851

1. John & Sarah Guntrip

In 1851 all three cottages in the Donkey Lane “Orchard”, containing the six households, were occupied. The lane, branching off as it does from the present “High Street”, not yet severed off from the village by the railway line, and stretching uphill over the fields to the Upper Icknield Way, had seen a change of name since 1841 when it was enumerated, or certainly the lower part which led from Hill Farm and past the cottages, as Holland Lane. Now in 1851 it is described as “Guntrip’s Lane”. One family living in the lane bears the surname of Guntrip and it would appear that the Lane took its new name from this fact.

Ten years earlier, in 1841, John and Sarah Guntrip, along with Sarah’s widowed mother, Mary Gomme were living there. Mary had passed away in 1842 leaving John and Sarah as the only occupants of the cottage. John Guntrip, of Thame, had married a Sarah Gomm/Gumm on the 7th December 1818 when John would have been about 37 years of age and Sarah about 36 - indicating that they had married quite late in life. No details of any children have been found so perhaps the marriage was childless. We do not know when they moved into the cottage in Holland’s Lane but this cottage formed their matrimonial home during the latter stages of their life together.

John, although now aged 73, had not retired and was still working as a “dealer in wood” who, we assume, would therefore have been purchasing timber from the local woods either by bidding at auction or buying certain areas of trees in the wood, arranging felling and taking the huge tree trunks back to the village. He probably stored the trees in the garden of his cottage or in a yard somewhere in the village and in some cases may have left them several months or years to “season” before being ready for use and sale. He may have cut the trunks down to smaller sizes. The wood and timber would then have been available for sale to local businesses who converted the timber into other smaller, saleable items - the chair maker, the chair turners, if the turners did not have a pitch within the woods themselves, the wheelwright, the cabinet maker, the carpenter and any other artisan who used wood to produce a finished article.

Big Fix 2020 - Greening Chinnor Repair Cafe

We're really pleased to be taking part in the The Big Fix 2020. Chinnor will be 1 of 75 repair cafes that are happening across the country on the same day! Never has there been a repair event attempted on this scale before. The goal is to fix as many broken, worn and once loved possessions in a single morning.

The national event is being coordinated by Devon County Council in partnership with all participating repair cafes and follows the success of The Big Fix in Exeter last year when volunteers broke the record for the number of items repaired at a single repair café. You can find out more about the Big Fix 2020 here.  This is a lovely video from the Malvern Hills Repair Cafe which explains what a repair café is, what happens when you get there and what the rational behind them is. https://www.facebook.com/MalvernHillsRepairCafe/videos/895130800650253/

So, when and where:

Chinnor Village Hall, Chinnor, OX39 4PG. Doors open at 10:00 am last item accepted 12:30.

You can bring any household goods that you can carry and that needs repairing. No white goods please.

We have a team of sewing repairers, electrical and mechanical repairers and *STOP PRESS* for the first time ever we can offer sharpening skills too. Plus, our every popular 'Glue' table.

Please note that we can’t promise to repair. We will do our best and to advise on alternatives. Help us to help you! Please bring all parts that would help us test the repair such as: power cords, mains adaptors, CDs, remote controls, etc. If you would like to pre-register your broken item you can do so on our Registration Form.

So can you come along even if you don't have anything to repair? Yes!

We want to raise awareness of repairing and reusing instead of ‘throwing away’, so please come and watch volunteers perform the repairs and learn from them and help support us by having a cup of tea and cake. So come along and be part of history!

Wassail 2020

We loved being a part of the Wassail at Donkey Lane Community Orchard on Saturday 11th January 2020 as our first event of the year... tad bit cold and blustery but that didn’t dampen anyone spirits!

‘King and Queen’ tree decorated and blessed on behalf of the orchard, noisy procession around the orchard, drinking mulled cider and apple juice, eating cake … what isn’t there to like!

Thanks to everyone who braved the elements to share this traditional ceremony, we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

Huge thanks to Claire from Midshires Orchard Group for leading the Wassail, we are always thankful for her help and to Village Voices Community Choir Towersey for helping put some ‘tune’ into our Wassail song and for the additional Wassail songs enjoyed by all.

Donkey Lane Community Orchard Blossom Day

28th April 2019 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Orchard

Most of the initial clearance work has now been completed and the site is much more safe to visit.

Unfortunately due to safety concerns both the den and tree house have had to be removed. Now that the light can get to the trees we are able to see some welcome fresh growth and considerable blossom.

We all knew about the Chinnor plum and it being a solitary specimen. Well we have now found and cleared three specimens. They are all covered in blossom and we wait with great interest as to the fruits.

For the first time in many, many years the orchard will be open to welcome visitors to see what has been achieved and to find out the plans for the future   Come along and enjoy the blossom. We will be delighted to show you around and we hope that you will enjoy a cup of tea and possibly a cake.

We will also be hosting a free Easter Egg trail for children.

Chinnor Parish Footpaths - Henton

We're delighted to report that the overgrown wasteland behind the houses on the left hand side of the main street in Henton (Footpaths 13 and 44) have now been cleared by the South Chiltern Path Maintenance Volunteers (SCPMV affiliated to the Chiltern Society) working alongside our Parish Path Warden.

This is still work in progress as the remaining rickety stiles will be replaced by gates once funds are available. Below you will see a couple of before and after pictures.

Repair Cafe

We held our second Repair Café towards the end of November and are delighted that our dedicated team of fixers were able to either fix the broken item or gave valuable advice as to where to get parts.

In a couple of instances the fixer even took the item home to either make the missing part or carry out a longer repair.

Between us over 70 kilos of repairs were carried out. Some of the items included:

A speaker, a CD/Stereo, a drill and charger, a coffee maker, a Kenwood mixer,  a desk fan, a wall clock, a solar light, toy railway pieces, a sports bag, 2 baby changing mats, a fleece, a coat, and an electronic baby toy.

This is a free service to the village and we only asked for a small donation towards the cost of the hall hire. Our intention is to run the next Repair Café in the spring and we will publicise it nearer the date. Keep an eye out for information by subscribing to our occasional newsletter and in the meantime, rather than throwing out items that are broken or missing buttons, put them to one side and bring them along to the next Repair Cafe.

Donkey Lane Community Orchard Meeting

Come along and find out how we plan to regenerate and restore the old, overgrown orchard in Donkey Lane, Chinnor, Oxfordshire to be a viable and shared community area.

For anyone who doesn't know where Donkey Lane is, it is at the top of Keens Lane, across the railway line and to the right. I'm sure that if you grew up in Chinnor, there would have been a time when you went scrumping there 😀😋

Several rare varieties of apples have been identified here 🍏🍏🍎🍎

Community Litter Pick

A huge thank you to everyone who came along to the community litter pick yesterday. 24 volunteers and 16 bags of litter collected. Well done everyone.

We were surprised at how much litter there was this time as over the years, the amount we have collected at each event has reduced. Sadly, this time it had increased and we're still having to pick up 'poo' bags!!!!!

Our thanks to the Parish Council for the loan of the litter picking equipment and for collecting the bags.

Look out for our next community litter pick which will be held in the spring.

Repair Cafe

Our next Repair Café will be held on

24 November 10:00 am – 1:00 pm

at Chinnor Village Hall

(last item accepted before 12:00 pm)

At the Repair Cafe, we try to fix broken household items in a collaborative and social way. The idea is to help you learn how to repair items and that you gain knowledge from the fixers. Items we are able to fix will depend entirely on the expertise of our volunteers on the day. This is a brilliant way to prevent waste and save you money and to enjoy our tea and cakes in this most sociable activity.

So, bring along your small portable broken electrical items, household items and clothes and we will try to help you repair them. More details and a full list of what we can and can’t accept will be updated and published on our website alternatively you can book your item in with our online Booking Form.

If you would like to help out at this event as a 'fixer', with registration and facilitation or helping to make tea ... email Linda at greeningchinnor@gmail.com or call 07973 788339.

Donkey Lane Community Orchard

Greening Chinnor are delighted to announce that we are working with Mr Derek Nixey, Chinnor Parish Council and The Chiltern Conservation Board to regenerate and restore the old, overgrown orchard in Donkey Lane.

Our aim is to restore the orchard to be a viable and shared community area. Not only are we looking at restoration but also about finding out and recording the habitat, wildlife and social history of the site. To enable this exiting project to get off the ground, we are looking for volunteers to help process the project.

We are holding an open general meeting on Wednesday 21 November in the White's Field Community Hall at 7:30 pm. To find out more come along and see what we’re planning. Light refreshments will be served.
